Basel Statement update in Brisbane — Request for input
The Hospital Pharmacy Section has started a project to update the Basel Statements.
The aim is to have a set of Basel Statements that remain relevant to hospital pharmacists in all World Health Organization regions. The scope is not to revise a great part of the statement set, but the project specifically will look at statements that might need clarification and/or slight modifications. In addition, the project is designed to identify implementation documents for the Basel Statements.
If you know of any hospital pharmacy standards published by professional organisations that are not members of FIP that might be relevant to this project, please email the name of the organisation (and preferably a link to the standards) to firstname.lastname@example.org. With your help, we hope to create a truly global mapping.
The project team consists of Jonathan Penm, Stephen Eckel, Régis Vaillancourt, Rebekah Moles, Cristina Sanches, Racha Dabliz, Mike Stepanovic and Rob Moss.
What are the Basel Statements?
Hospital pharmacists from around the world met in Basel, Switzerland, in 2008, to discuss the future of their sector. This historic two-day meeting, hosted by FIP’s Hospital Pharmacy Section, came to a consensus over 75 statements reflecting their vision of practice: the Basel Statements.
The Basel Statements cover all areas of the medicine use process in hospitals, from procurement to monitoring.
In 2014, hospital pharmacists again gathered, this time in Bangkok, Thailand, to input into future practice through updating the statements. The latest version of the Basel Statements was launched in September 2015. There are now 65 statements.
What the statements cover
The Basel Statements can be split into seven areas:

The Hospital Pharmacy Section has created a Basel Statement self-assessment survey to measure your hospital's services compared to the Basel Statements. The self-assessment tool also allows you to take the survey again over time to see the progress after improvements are made. In addition, the self-assessment tool allows you to compare your hospital's pharmacy services to other hospitals that you choose.
A recording of a Webinar with very helpful tips to complete the survey is posted here.
The Basel Statement Self-Assessment survey is available here.
The Basel Statements have been used in hospitals around the world:
